Sports Day Extravaganza
What a day it was at the Newmarket Summer Saturday Races. A quintessentially British experience with a splash of rain for good measure. It was an event that proved once again that a little downpour can’t dampen our spirits.
There’s a saying that fits perfectly, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain”. Honestly, could there be a more fitting phrase? I and my fellow racegoers fully embraced this motto. Brits have a knack for making the best of a rainy situation and the shared camaraderie we experienced is worth its weight in gold.
The buzz at Newmarket races today was something else. Excitement rippling through the crowds as the horses thunder down the course, followed by roars of victory. Winning a bet on a horse, especially one with such an uplifting name as ‘I Still Have Faith’, felt like an additional sweet victory. It’s like a testament to never losing hope and having faith whatever situation you find yourself in.
The highlight of my day was witnessing a lady dancing in the rain without a care in the world. Her carefree spirit and infectious energy, dancing with joy and celebration had the whole Grandstand smiling.
A Day Out for Families in Cambridgeshire
Newmarket’s sports day is a day for families and large groups of friends. Compete your way through the inflatable assault course, football darts, mini-golf (where the parents always seem to be the competitive ones), flying ufos and a play area.
A myriad of challenges kept the thrill alive throughout the day. Including
- ‘Rodeo Football’, a wild mix of football skills and rodeo-style staying power.
- The ‘Surf’s Up’ challenge – a battle of balance as contestants vied to stay put on a mechanical surfboard.
- The retro take on the ‘Hammer-Head’ challenge, requiring participants to dart between cones, aiming to strike those that lit up. It was like a vibrant, real-life version of the classic whack-a-mole game.
- A Sumo wrestling area (with suits!)
- Pedal go-karts, to zip round like little daredevils.
There’s certainly lots of entertainment to keep the whole family engaged.
Food and Drink at the Races
You’re in for a treat when it comes to the food options at Newmarket races. For those who fancy a little international flare, the Mexican food looked to be a hit with huge tacos and chilli. The quintessentially British, ‘Chippy’ was a lifesaver, serving up crispy fish and chips that warmed the heart even on a drizzly day.
The wafting aroma of the Smoky BBQ lured many to its sizzling burgers, while the Crepe stand whipped up sweet delights! (See video – they were divine!)
For the adults, a choice of bars can be found spotted around the venue including a champagne bar, Pimm’s bar, garden terrace, plus teas and hot chocolates are available from the food fans.
In short, Newmarket races ensured no attendee went hungry or thirsty, adding a delectable culinary journey to the thrill of the horse races. Whether you’re a foodie, a drinks connoisseur, or just looking for some satisfying grub to fuel your day, the Newmarket races have got you covered.
