Sometimes, in our relentless quest to discover new horizons and exotic locations, we forget that true beauty can often be found right under our noses. For me, that revelation came during an evening visit to Malpas, a quaint village in Cornwall. The highlight of the experience? A spectacular sunset over the estuary that was nothing short of magical.

A Brief History of Malpas
The village started as a river crossing lost in the mists of time and developed into a bustling hub with boatyards, tanneries, and coal yards in the 18th century. By the 19th century, Malpas had transformed into the village it is today. Its riverbanks and cottages still whisper tales of its industrial past, while welcoming modern-day visitors in search of peace and tranquility.
Interestingly, the village has long been a centre for both work and pleasure, particularly through its waterway activities. Malpas Regattas were well-known events, drawing large crowds as far back as the 1850s. Even Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and a young Prince Edward sailed up the Truro River in 1846, stopping just above Malpas at what is now known as Victoria Point. According to Queen Victoria’s diary, they were met with enthusiastic cheers from locals, making it a “very pretty gratifying sight.”
Malpas, Cornwall
Located just a short walk from Truro, Malpas is a quiet, idyllic spot known for its beautiful river views and birdlife. The village has a certain timeless quality, which makes it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The estuary, where the Tresillian and Truro rivers converge instantly draws you in with boats bobbing gently in the water. I was lucky enough to visit with my best friend and our kids this summer. That’s me in the blue and Sarah in the orange, like a ray of sunshine that she is.
As we enjoyed our walk, my stomach began to chime in, as if competing with the cries of the seagulls. Laughing about how the sea air had stirred our appetites, we knew it was time to refuel.
A Feast at the Heron Inn
For dinner, we chose the Heron Inn, highly recommended by locals and tourists alike. And let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint! With its friendly staff and award-winning food, the restaurant was a hit with all of us, kids included. Picture this: dining on exquisite fish dishes, overlooking the stunning estuary with its boats silently anchored, all while slowly making your way through a bottle of wine. What is not to love!
Sunset on Malpas
Post dinner we took a stroll back towards Truro and was treated to the most breathtaking sunset. For a moment, it felt like the world had paused to admire this beautiful display.
In a world that often moves too fast, it’s experiences like these that remind us to pause and enjoy the simple things. Good food, the beauty of nature and the company of loved ones. If you’re ever in Cornwall, don’t miss out on the chance to visit Malpas and perhaps dine at the Heron Inn.
Cheers to more adventures, sunsets, and plates full of deliciousness! 🥂
